This pendant is made from a beautiful tropical beetle electroformed in pure copper with added carnelian gemstones times three.
I have sourced the beetle specimens from an online ethical seller, already dead.
I rehydrate the specimens and pin them in position.
Once they are to my liking I start the electroforming process which involves many stages and takes many hours of intricate detailing work. It is during this stage that I add any gemstones, resin or wires.
After electroforming the pendant is polished, a copper antiquing patina is added, and the pieces are sealed in thermoplastic lacquer.
The gemstones are then cleaned again to remove lacquer, and I create chains or cords for each piece.
The beetles and butterflies are still within the piece, encased in copper. This means that each piece is one of a kind, and also means it is delicate. Never bend your jewellery as the electroforming process does not add unlimited strength to the invertebrate's exoskeleton, although it does add some strength, the joints and thin appendages such as antennae and legs can still be fragile.

Care Instructions
Care Instructions
With a few simple steps and a little knowledge, the speed and likelihood of the oxidization reaction can be lowered. The oxidization reaction is also responsible for creating the aged copper effect, which gives the jewelry a unique rustic look as it is worn (and loved!) by you.
- Do not expose copper jewelry (especially patinated copper jewelry) to water or any type of solvent.
- Do not wear copper jewelry while swimming (chlorine and salt will permanently damage copper and/or patina).
- Do not wear copper jewelry while exercising, applying cosmetics, skin lotions or creams.
- Keep the copper clean and dry as much as possible. Wipe down with a soft cloth and place in a clean baggie after it has been worn. Use anti-tarnish paper if needed.
- Remove jewelry before bed. Also, while washing your hands, showering or bathing, so soap and water does not get trapped under the band/pendant.
For more information please review the Copper Care Page I have created here.
