I love butterflies, and I have worked hard the past three years to find a way to preserve them in whimsical jewellery. This is challenging as the wings of a butterfly can be thinner than paper! Each butterfly is pinned and dried, then treated with many layers of paints and solutions to prepare them for electroforming. The electroforming is in a very acidic solution so the insect must be protected or it will be corroded/dissolved Then the butterfly is polished, patina us added to darken the copper, and the copper is sealed.

It is made from the insect itself, and 100% pure copper which has been electroformed over the insect wings, making them strong.

Red jasper is a type of chalcedony, a form of microcrystalline quartz, known for its deep red coloration. It is formed through the deposition of silica-rich fluids in cracks and cavities within rocks, where it undergoes a process of crystallization over time. This mineral is often found in association with iron oxides, which contribute to its distinctive red hue. Red jasper can be found in various geological settings, including sedimentary rocks, volcanic formations, and hydrothermal veins.

In terms of mineral properties, red jasper is known for its grounding and stabilizing energy. It is believed to provide strength, courage, and vitality to the wearer, making it a popular choice for those seeking physical and emotional balance. Red jasper is also associated with the root chakra, which governs feelings of security, survival, and connection to the earth. This mineral is thought to promote a sense of stability and security, helping individuals overcome challenges and obstacles in their lives.

Additionally, red jasper is said to have protective properties, shielding the wearer from negative energies and promoting a sense of inner peace. It is often used in crystal healing practices to enhance vitality, endurance, and motivation. Overall, red jasper is a powerful and versatile mineral with a rich history of use in various cultures for its healing and metaphysical properties.

It has some delicate parts and should be worn carefully to avoid breaking the wings, which are the thinnest copper areas. The necklace should never be bent or it will break.

I have coated the copper in a thermoplastic lacquer to make sure it keeps its colour and texture, without further patina. Having said that, don't wear this piece in water or use perfumes or other liquids on or near it to prevent unwanted corrosion.

This is a sensational show stopping piece of jewellery that will surely turn heads.

It comes with the chain pictured, and sits as in the modelled photos, at chest length.

Care Instructions

With a few simple steps and a little knowledge, the speed and likelihood of the oxidization reaction can be lowered. The oxidization reaction is also responsible for creating the aged copper effect, which gives the jewelry a unique rustic look as it is worn (and loved!) by you.

  • Do not expose copper jewelry (especially patinated copper jewelry) to water or any type of solvent.
  • Do not wear copper jewelry while swimming (chlorine and salt will permanently damage copper and/or patina).
  • Do not wear copper jewelry while exercising, applying cosmetics, skin lotions or creams.
  • Keep the copper clean and dry as much as possible. Wipe down with a soft cloth and place in a clean baggie after it has been worn. Use anti-tarnish paper if needed.
  • Remove jewelry before bed. Also, while washing your hands, showering or bathing, so soap and water does not get trapped under the band/pendant.
